The vote for the most beautiful Åland 2020 stamp has now been completed, and we have a result. Two of the eleven stamp issues surfaced early as favourites. The sailing ship stamp series featuring Mozart and Viking designed by artist and skipper Allan Palmer came out victorious, closely followed by the “four seasons” stamp booklet that shows photos of the Esplanade in Mariehamn, a pedestrian area lined with lime trees.
The Åland sailing ship stamp series won the collectors’ vote for the third time, winning first place in the 2020 vote for the most beautiful Åland stamp. The 6-year stamp series designed by Åland skipper and artist Allan Palmer was concluded on 2 February 2020. The last two stamps in the series featured the barquentine Mozart and the 4-masted barque Viking. Starting in 2015, the sailing ship series won the vote for the most beautiful Åland stamp series already the same year and also took home the title in 2018.
The collectors’ other great favourite of the year, the “four seasons” stamp booklet, had to accept the second place. During the four seasons of the year, Åland photographer Kjell Söderlund shot photos of the Esplanade, the lime tree avenue in Mariehamn. The booklet was issued on 4 September 2020.
Third place went to the Europa stamp on the theme “Old postal routes”. Shot by David Lundberg, the stamp shows an image of boats competing in the Postal Boat Race across the Sea of Åland.
A big thank you to everyone who cast their votes. We have drawn lots for a secret box and several other collector’s prizes that have been posted to winners in Germany, Finland, Sweden, Slovenia, and the USA.
